In a rare move, which has surprised the gospel music fraternity, artist Khama Khwiliro has announced a break at the summit of his career.

Khwiliro has taken a break at a time he has just released a powerful remix of Ali nawo Maso, which features Eliza Mponya. However, he was quick to point out that he will bounce back in the future.

“It’s just a break, I will be back. I want to strategise on rebranding and while away I want to change my musical style and God willing, find a manager,” said Khwiliro in an interview.

Khwiliro: I want to reflect on my career

Of late, the country’s music industry has proved to be taxing for artists as far as marketing, distribution and income of their artworks. Since the closure of most music shops such as O.G Issa and  Citinati, artists have been finding it extremely hard to survive on art.

Stiff competition has also forced some artists out of the game for the industry has proved to be a survival of the fittest.

Asked whether he was running away from the competition which has left others penniless and redundant on the country’s music arena, Khwiliro said he has taken a bow while hot.

“It would’ve been something else if I took a break while unpopular. But I am taking the break at a time my name is still relevant. For record purposes, I have just released Ali nawo Maso remix and happen to be one of the recipients of the recently presented ringtones royalties by Airtel. I just want to reflect on my career and see how best I can contribute to the music industry,” said Khwiliro.

Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) president the Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango said it is important for artists to assess their value and services.

“Musicians should strive to be unique and present the best if they are to command respect and survive the heat,” said Mhango.

Khwiliro, 33, embarked on musical journey a decade ago with Christ Melodies but only to dump it in 2010 to concentrate on his solo career up to date. n
